Boating in Broward County | Boat Ft. Lauderdale | Port Everglades & more

I live in Palm Beach County and am embarrassed to say I've never taken my PWC to Broward. Renting a house on a navigable canal end of this month in Oakland Park and have friends coming from out of town. The owner of the home said the two closest boat ramps are Cherry Creek and Colohatchee. Two questions: 1) For those with experience at both, is one better than the other?; 2) Any suggestions on where to head after dropping in? Any sandbars to hang out at, fun spots, etc. Thanks in advance!

Hey Dave, well I hate to burst your bubble BUT..neither of those boat ramps are close to anything but houses, and idle speed zones. And trust me, dont test Wilton Manors police, they have a immense hatred for PWC in their waters. You would be better off going to to either 15th st boat ramps, or John U Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach. As far as Islands and places to hang out, well Fort Lauderdale doesnt have many if any at all, with the exception of Whiskey Creek in John U Lloyd park. Hope this helps you out a little bit. Dont waste your gas/time/energy OR risk the ticket by putting the pwc in at either of those ramps, go to 15th st or John U Lloyd.

Hey Justin. Thanks for the heads up! I mainly rented this house to drop my ski in for the week and not have to worry about trailering, but after looking at Google Maps, it seems like it would be quite a trip to get out of the residential area. Funny thing is when I told my friend, she said "oh, that sounds nice, checking out the houses and all....". She's the guest, but think I'll pass and take your advice
Not a problem. And yes, idle speed through the back canals takes about an hour to get to the intracoastal from either of those ramps. 15th st your less then 5 minutes from the ocean, and John U Lloyd, your 3 minutes from the ocean. Not to mention, the fact that there is alot of finger canals that branch off from that canal that you need to be on to get to the intracoastal from where the ramps are, and for someone who is not familiar with the area, this could be a very long process, and with the fuel tanks in a PWC, you run a good risk of running out of fuel. It is very easy to get turned around on the water, and end up going around in circles. Everything looks the same if your not familiar. If you dont have a nautical gps it can be a long day. And I doubt you have a nautical GPS on your pwc.
The following post came in from our facebook fanpage from Anthony Stashak -

Go south on I-95 to 79th street. Go east and cross the first bridge on the ICW to a great boat ramp. The waterways of this area are truly amazing for all types of watercraft. Look at a chart or gps to navigate around some of the most beautiful waterways in the world.
I can agree with that....just be careful of all the novice and jackass boaters. there are quite a few of them down there.
Thanks guys. I looked at a map and don't see an exit for 79th Street. It's in Ft. Lauderdale area?
